Learning Environment

Bringing children the best of both worlds – indoors and out

Maria Montessori advocated the need for an “enabling environment” while she also emphasised the need for children to explore the real world so we are fortunate to be located in the wonderful Cator Park and have our own garden, outdoor classroom and sports Astroturf area to add to the indoor classrooms, all of which we have resourced without compromise to benefit the children internally and externally

Our carefully prepared environment includes low level wooden shelves containing the Montessori materials for “Activities for Everyday Living”, “Education of the Senses”, “Mathematics”, “Literacy”, “Cultural” and “Understanding the World”. In addition to the Montessori materials there are many other activities including:

  • expressive art and design materials to stimulate the imagination and creative skills
  • science and ICT equipment, puzzles and sorting games to encourage counting, matching and logical thinking
  • a well stocked and comfortable book area to encourage a love of books
  • free-play activities, such as a role play area and construction toys for imaginary play to develop spatial awareness, motor skills, language and social skills

Our children also enjoy a carefully planned programme of special activities and events including:

  • visits from key people in the community such as a police officer, doctor and a fire fighter
  • family week, where parents come in to talk to the children about their jobs, holiday experiences, hobbies, culture and pets
  • events throughout the year including our Nativity performance at Christmas and the celebration of many festivals from different cultures and religions around the world, which often include music, dance, story-telling and cooking

The outdoor classroom on the decking, mirrors the indoor classroom with low level wooden shelving containing materials from each of the Montessori and EYFS curriculum areas of learning and development. On our Astroturf sports area a fully qualified sports coach delivers a variety of sports activities all day, every day whatever the weather.  These include hockey, cricket, rugby, athletics, gymnastics, golf and tug of war, all of which are demonstrated at our annual sports day. We also have larger equipment for example a slide, balancing beams, tricycles, planks, tyres and sand and water play-trays. Our mud-kitchen, digging, mini beast and planting areas add to the whole outdoor experience. In addition, our children enjoy a carefully planned programme of special activities, outings and events including nature walks in the park, visits to the library and the teddy-bears picnic where we eat the food harvested from the children’s own planting programme.
